From the life altering experience I had at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, I decided to start a space club. I selected 6 directors to help me. We opened it to children from Grades 1-8. Thirty-Two children showed up for Mission #1, February 24, 2019. We met from 2-4 pm with 1.5 hours of hands-on activities and the final 30 minutes for a pizza snack hosted by Boston Pizza in Uxbridge. We were down to 12 in attendance for Mission 4 in May.
Why the declining attendance? Two hours on a Sunday afternoon with an increase in outdoor temperature following a long, cold winter could be one reason. From my youth, I recall Sunday afternoons as a family day doing things with the whole family. I suspect the same is true today.
I had presenters lined up for April to June. I was in Florida for March, but had to return home with the outbreak of Covid. The rest of the missions were cancelled by me since the safety of the children was my main concern.
